Diabetes is a long-term condition. But long-term does not mean hopeless. It means manageable.

This audio series is broken into short, 2-minute segments. Each one focuses on a single idea. You can listen while walking, driving, or relaxing at home.

Over the next four hours, we will talk about:

You do not need to be perfect. You only need to be consistent. Every small improvement matters.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where the body has difficulty managing blood sugar, also called glucose.

Glucose is your body’s main source of energy. It comes from the food you eat. After you eat, glucose enters your bloodstream.

Your pancreas makes a hormone called insulin. Insulin acts like a key. It helps move glucose from the bloodstream into your cells, where it is used for energy.

In diabetes, one of two things happens:

  • The body does not make enough insulin.
  • Or the body does not use insulin effectively. This is called insulin resistance.

When glucose stays in the bloodstream instead of entering cells, blood sugar rises.

Over time, high blood sugar can damage blood vessels, nerves, kidneys, eyes, and the heart.

The good news? Blood sugar can be managed. And better control reduces risk significantly.

Knowledge is your first tool.

Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

There are two main types of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. The body makes little or no insulin. People with Type 1 diabetes require insulin for survival.

Type 2 diabetes is more common. In Type 2:

  • The body becomes resistant to insulin.
  • Over time, insulin production may decrease.

Type 2 is influenced by genetics, weight, physical activity, sleep, and metabolic health.

Both types require management. Both can be treated effectively. And both benefit from structured care.

Regardless of the type, the goals are similar:

  • Maintain healthy blood sugar levels
  • Protect organs
  • Reduce long-term risk
  • Improve quality of life

Diabetes does not define you. It is a condition you manage—not who you are.

What Is A1C?

You may have heard the term A1C. A1C is a blood test that reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months. Glucose attaches to hemoglobin in red blood cells. The higher your blood sugar, the higher your A1C.

For many adults, a common target is below 7 percent. But goals vary. Your care team individualizes this based on:

  • Age
  • Other medical conditions
  • Risk of low blood sugar
  • Duration of diabetes

Lowering A1C by even 1 percent significantly reduces the risk of complications. This is important: A1C is not a grade. It is information.

It helps guide adjustments in:

  • Food
  • Exercise
  • Medication
  • Monitoring

Think of A1C as a dashboard reading—not a judgment.

Daily Blood Sugar Monitoring

Monitoring gives you real-time feedback.

Depending on your treatment plan, you may:

  • Check fingerstick glucose
  • Use a continuous glucose monitor, called a CGM

Monitoring helps you understand:

  • How food affects you
  • How exercise affects you
  • How medications are working
  • When blood sugar is too low or too high

Typical fasting targets may range from 80 to 130 mg/dL for many adults. After meals, often under 180 mg/dL. But again—your goals may differ.

Patterns matter more than single numbers.

Do not panic over one high reading. Instead, ask:
What caused this?
What can I learn?

Monitoring is a tool for awareness—not anxiety.

Understanding High Blood Sugar

High blood sugar is called hyperglycemia.

Symptoms may include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurry vision
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches

Sometimes there are no symptoms at all.

Persistent high blood sugar damages small and large blood vessels. Over time, this increases risk of:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Kidney disease
  • Nerve damage
  • Vision problems

Short-term spikes happen. That is normal. What matters is overall control and trend improvement.

When blood sugar runs high consistently, adjustments can be made:

  • Nutrition changes
  • Increased activity
  • Medication adjustments

High blood sugar is not failure. It is feedback.

Understanding Low Blood Sugar

Low blood sugar is called hypoglycemia. It is more common in people using insulin or certain medications.

Symptoms may include:

  • Shaking
  • Sweating
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Confusion
  • Irritability
  • Dizziness

If blood sugar drops below 70 mg/dL, treatment is recommended.

The common rule is the 15-15 rule:
Take 15 grams of fast-acting carbohydrate.
Recheck in 15 minutes.

Examples include:

  • 4 glucose tablets
  • 4 ounces of juice
  • Regular soda, not diet

Severe hypoglycemia is a medical emergency. Preventing lows is just as important as lowering highs. Balance is the goal.

The Role of Nutrition

Food directly affects blood sugar.

Carbohydrates raise blood sugar the most. These include:

  • Bread
  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Fruit
  • Milk
  • Sweets

But carbohydrates are not the enemy. Quantity and quality matter. Fiber slows absorption and improves control. Protein and healthy fats help stabilize blood sugar and increase satiety.

A helpful approach:

  • Half your plate should be non-starchy vegetables
  • One quarter lean protein
  • One quarter whole grains or starchy vegetables

No single meal determines your health. Consistency over time makes the difference. Food is not about restriction. It is about informed choices.

Understanding Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates break down into glucose.

Simple carbohydrates raise blood sugar quickly. These include:

  • Sugary drinks
  • Candy
  • White bread

Complex carbohydrates contain fiber and digest more slowly. These include:

  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Whole grains
  • Vegetables

Reading food labels helps.

Look at:

  • Total carbohydrates
  • Fiber content
  • Added sugars

For some individuals, carbohydrate counting is helpful. For others, portion awareness is enough. You do not have to eliminate carbohydrates. You need to understand how they affect you.

Awareness creates control.

The Power of Physical Activity

Exercise lowers blood sugar. When muscles contract, they use glucose—even without insulin.

Physical activity also:

  • Improves insulin sensitivity
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Improves cholesterol
  • Supports weight management
  • Reduces stress

Aim for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate activity, such as brisk walking. Strength training twice weekly improves glucose control even further. You do not need a gym. Walking after meals is powerful. 

Movement is medicine. Start small. Stay consistent.
